A Research Unit comprises an evolving group of theorists and artists from different institutions.
Identification and status of research
The idea of research is inherent in artistic activity, by definition. It has to be seen in relation to the concepts of project, work, process, experimentation, singularity, method, attitude, relevance and cultural conditions, which are determined by its maieutic, qualificatory and inductive roles. If it is the case that research constitutes the essence of the work and intellectual activity that lead to the discovery of fresh knowledge and means of expression, this implies that it may be understood as the most important part of the project. And it would thus be unnecessarily reductivist to view artistic activity exclusively as a "sensorial reaction to the world".
The erstwhile question as to whether "the work of art is an object of knowledge" takes on its full sense in the current teaching context, and particularly from the point of view of the "maker", in other words, in this instance, the student. What is necessary is to create the conditions of emergence and development of the interrogative power of the student's subjective research with regard to artistic integrity. Though the cultural domain and its supporting material structures are for the most part visually-based, it remains the case that a research project in this domain, as in any other field of activity, will be founded on a synthesis of insight (affects), observation (percepts) and reflection (concepts), where the "desire" of discovery is the motor, and differences are predicated on levels of power, intensity and contextualised typologies of investment. If there is such a thing as "specificity" in artistic research, it is probably to be found in the infinite diversity of epistemologies that orientate techniques, expertise and composites of attitude, posture and relationship to the world, which, from the critique of the artistic activity to the critique of the work as such, continuously reformulate an image of thought processes that draws on constitutive knowledge and traverses instituted disciplines which are chronically uneasy about themselves. From experimentation to process, from reiterated study to "work" on the medium, from questions about the status of the artist to questions about the function of the work, artistic research takes place over the short, medium and long terms, in the construction of projects which, from "work" (painting, for example) to "work" (painted, for example), steers a path between one syntactic genre and another, and, in so doing, undergoes a process of auto-genesis at the very time of rethinking its methods and redrawing the cartography of its territories.
Research
One of the student's difficulties consists of inventing an individual research project, and coming up with the techniques necessary to bring it to fruition. This is a major issue in the Project phase. In parallel with their personal research projects, students can connect up to different research programmes within the ARC, in the context of research projects or seminars.
